WHAT?

Bern’s Natural History Museum is one of the best renowned in Switzerland. Its historic dioramas exhibitions of native and exotic animals are unique in Central Europe and form the basis of the institution’s international reputation. Bern’s oldest museum has made a name for itself in recent years by holding attractive thematic exhibitions such as the new exhibition «Apocalypse – End Without End». One of the museum’s best-known exhibits is Barry the world-famous rescue dog, a St. Bernard who recently had an entire exhibition dedicated to him. The giant Planggenstock crystals now permanently on display form another highlight. The NMBE is a family museum and runs numerous activities for families and children. It also hosts regular events such as a «dead animal bar» which is part of a program series entitled «Help, it’s alive!».

WHAT?

More direct access than ever before: besides interactive displays, surprising objects and large-scale video screens, visitors to the Museum of Communication will now also be introduced to the fascinating world of communication by people made of flesh and blood, by our communicators. A stagecoach, microchip implants or an original getaway car used in the robbery of the century? The new core exhibition examines all forms of communication, which has always connected human beings. But why do we communicate? And who do we communicate with? The exhibition explores these fundamental questions in a playful manner whilst calling on its visitors to contribute their expert thoughts. You can take part in a game of film karaoke and re-enact famous scenes, you can breach your opponent’s firewall in a hacking game – you can try something different every time you visit the museum.

Cantonale Berne Jura

WHAT?

Since 1918, this institution has made its mark on international art history – and created controversy. One major Swiss newspaper dismissed Paul Klee’s one-man show of 1935 as the «kitchen garden of a schizophrenic». Christo’s first wrapping installation in 1968 attracted worldwide attention. Another exhibition «When Attitudes Become Form» also made history. Alberto Giacometti, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Jasper Johns and Luc Tuymans put on major one-man shows here, sometimes for the very first time. The Kunsthalle remains dedicated to that spirit: it keeps its finger on the beating pulse of art. It provides an encounter with the latest regional, national and international trends. Six or seven group and one-man exhibitions – some of them exclusive – are organised here every year. Then there are guided tours, lectures and debates – and intensive activities giving a direct experience of art.
