MARIAN CROAK
is currently Vice-President of Engineering at Google.
She has started her university cursus at Princeton, NJ
before completing her doctorial studies at the
University of Southern California in 1982, specializing
in social psychology and quantitative analysis.
At the end of her studies, she was hired at AT&T's Bell
Labs. One of her main projects was developing
VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) which then became
adopted globally. She has filed more than one
hundred patents related to this technology, among her
total of over two hundred patents.
Another patent that she has filed is the use of phone
network to donate to crisis appeals. This was
first developed when AT&T teamed up with American
Idol to allow television viewers to vote for their
favorite performer. 22% of the viewers learned to text
to be able to make their voice heard in the show.
This was in 2003. Two years later, the Hurricane Katrina
wrecked the Gulf Coast. This is when she filed
the patent for text-based donations. It all came to light
in 2010, with the Haiti earthquake crisis, where
text-based donations allowed to raise up to $30 million
through different organisations.
Though the patent does not cover every possible use
of the technology, AT&T has not tried to make it
proprietary. Marian Croak has stated that "Everybody
can use it. And I hope everybody uses it."
